STATEMENT BY KAI EIDE, SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE OF THE UN SECRETARY-GENERAL FOR AFGHANISTAN

November 30, 2017

It is with enormous sorrow that I have learned of the death of an Afghan colleague who was a contract worker for UNHCR in Surah Rod district of Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan.

Bellis Mazloom Yar was shot dead in front of elders at a meeting on 26 November of the local shore at Lower Sheikh Messi, a temporary settlement for returnees. Her murderer has not been identified and at this stage the reasons for the attack remain unclear.

Ms. Mazloom Yar was a cherished colleague, and was well known for her activism in support of her community, in particular on women’s causes. The United Nations family, as well as human rights partners and NGOs in Afghanistan stand together in condemning her murder and in calling for a thorough investigation.

All our thoughts are with MS Mazloom Yar, her family, and her many friends.
