Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson of the
Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan
on the case of Christian convert Abdul Rahman

[Print Version]

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has this evening received a significant volume of questions from journalists concerning developments relating to the Abdul Rahman case.

UNAMA, in implementing its mandate for good offices and the upholding of respect for human rights, has been following this case closely since the outset. We are working to find a solution in cooperation with the Government of Afghanistan.

Mr. Abdul Rahman has asked for asylum outside Afghanistan. We expect that this will be provided by one of the countries interested in a peaceful solution to this case.

Kabul, 27 March 2006
