Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson of the
Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan
following the crash and rescue of the Kam Air airplane

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan, Jean Arnault, wishes to convey its condolences to the family members and friends who have lost loved ones following the Kam Air plane disaster which occurred last Thursday.

There were eight crew members and 96 passengers on the aircraft, the majority of which were Afghans traveling within the country. Among the 104 were international workers who had dedicated their lives to help Afghanistan build a new future.

The Afghan authorities, as well as ISAF and the Coalition Forces, spared no effort to locate and access the crash site in a particularly inhospitable and mountainous area. We want to commend them and all those involved in the search and rescue operations.

Kabul, 09 February 2005
