Statement Attributable to the Spokesman of the
Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan

The Special Representative for the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Afghanistan, Jean Arnault, is outraged at the killing this morning of one Afghan staff member of the Secretariat of the Joint Electoral Management Body (JEMB) and another individual, possibly a voter registrant, at a voter registration site in Ghazni. He condemns in the strongest terms this callous attack, which was carried out on a registration site located in a Mosque and that also left seven other Afghans wounded, including two, who are reported to have serious injuries.

The Special Representative conveys his condolences and expresses his sympathy to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased. He wishes a swift recovery to those wounded.

According to preliminary reports at 8:00 a.m. today (28 July) an explosive device went off in a registration site in Belal Kheil village, Andar District, Ghazni. The two JEMB staff members reported as being seriously injured, were medically evacuated by UN Helicopter to the Bagram military hospital. The five other JEMB staff members who suffered lesser injuries are being treated locally.
