Statement Attributable to the Spokesman of the
Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for Afghanistan, Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi, condemns the vicious attack on a vehicle of the Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) last Wednesday (13 August), which resulted in the death of two national staff members and gunshot injuries to four others.

The brutal and premeditated attack took place in daylight in the village of Nazak Mohammad Ghaus, Andar district, Ghazni province when two gunmen on a motorbike approached the ARCS vehicle and fired on the passengers inside with AK-47 rifles. This attack follows similar ones in the country in the last 10 days when another Afghan aid worker was killed while others were fired at including by rocket or beaten and brutalized.

The Special Representative extends his deepest sympathy to the families, friends as well as colleagues of the slain employees and hopes for the prompt and full recovery of those injured. The SRSG reiterates that the goal of members of the aid community in Afghanistan, be they nationals or internationals, is to help the needy and vulnerable to improve their living conditions.

The Special Representative also reiterates that the international community will not be deterred by these acts. The United Nations is committed to using all means available to continue providing the necessary assistance to the Afghan people.

Kabul, 17 August 2003
