Statement by Tom Koenigs, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan on Sunday's execution of prisoners

[Print Version]

October 8, 2007

The United Nations has expressed its concerns on many occasions about the use of the death penalty. The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan has been a staunch supporter of the moratorium on executions observed in Afghanistan in recent years, and it is my personal view that the death penalty should be abolished worldwide.

It is the sovereign right of the Afghan people and their elected Government to decide how law is administered. Nonetheless, I expect Afghanistan to continue working towards attaining highest human rights standards and ensuring that due process of law and the rights of all citizens are respected.
