| Statement by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Afghanistan, Tom Koenigs | |||||||||
December 18, 2007 On behalf of the entire United Nations family, I wish to extend my warm congratulations to the people of Afghanistan on the occasion of Eid-al-Adha – a celebration of both the meaning of sacrifice and the vital importance of peace. On this Eid, Afghans have every reason to celebrate their accomplishments – from improved health care services to millions of children returning to school. Eid is a time to unite in faith and hope for the future with family and friends. Throughout the course of this year I have been heartened and moved by the demand for peace from grassroots communities across the country. For the first time we saw tribal communities from Afghanistan and Pakistan join together to work towards securing a lasting peace for all peoples. Overcoming a legacy of conflict takes time: much remains to be done. In this respect Afghanistan can rightly draw on a rich history and culture. We in the United Nations remain with you as the patient work of cementing peace, stability and progress continues in the coming year. May peace be with you, your family and with all Afghanistan. Eid Mubarak.
