Statement of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan on the assassination of Abdul Hakim Tanaiwal, Governor of Paktia province

[Print Version]

It is with great sadness that I have learned today of the murder of Abdul Hakim Tanaiwal, governor of Afghanistan’s southeastern province of Paktia. The information conveyed to me is that Professor Tanaiwal was killed in a suicide bombing along with members of his entourage and several other people. I offer my condolences and sympathies to his family, as well as to all the victims and their families.

Professor Tanaiwal had returned to Afghanistan from Australia following the collapse of the Taliban to help rebuild his homeland. His death is a great loss to the people of Paktia, to the people of the Tani tribe –- of which he was a leader, and to the country as a whole. He and I worked together, there was trust and respect between us, and we had much in common.

The murder of Mr. Tanaiwal is entirely beyond my understanding. I condemn it.

Kabul, 10 September 2006
