Statement by Deputy Special Representative of the
Secretary-General in Afghanistan Chris Alexander on the assassination of Wolesi Jirga member for Samangan,
Maulvi Mohammad Islam Mohammadi

[Print Version]

The assassination of Maulvi Mohammad Islam Mohammadi is a great loss for Afghanistan. It represents an assault on the democratic will of the people who voted in their millions for peace, stability and progress during historic elections in 1384.

Maulvi Mohammadi served his country honorably as a mujahid, as a religious scholar and as a parliamentarian. He is now the first Wolesi Jirga member to be killed since Afghanistan’s new National Assembly was inaugurated in December 2005. This murder is particularly distressing coming as Afghans mark the holy month of Moharram and on the eve of the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain.

This attack underlines the risks faced by dedicated parliamentarians as they work tirelessly to forge a new future for the people of Afghanistan. We urge Afghan authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly and call on them to step up protection for all parliamentarians representing communities across Afghanistan.

Our thoughts remain with the family, friends and constituents of Maulvi Mohammadi at this difficult time.

Kabul, 29 January 2007
