On international day, UN spotlights link between human rights and peace

Famous Afghan cartoonist makes his contribution to UN peace cartoons campaign

A well known Afghan cartoonist living in Canada has drawn a series of cartoons as his contribution to the Peace Day campaign in Afghanistan. UNAMA has already commissioned three leading cartoonists in Kabul to draw seven cartoons each on the theme of peace; the 21 cartoons have been released one day at a time to the media since 1 September and will form a major exhibition on Peace Day on 21 September. UN says peace day polio vacinations going ahead

17 September 2008 - The message of 'International Peace Day' will be seen in the skies across Afghanistan on the sides of scheduled UNHAS flights which will also be delivering stickers and bookmarks to highlight the day for WFP to distribute in eight provinces. English

17 September 2008 - It’s the end of July, the hottest month in Bamyan, the central province in Afghanistan, famous for its giant Buddha statues and amazing lakes. The people of Afghanistan are staring in a major international film on Peace Day 2007. Despite all the troubles of the last 30 years ordinary people took to the streets to demand peace:children were vaccinated, schools were painted, food was delivered, Jirgas, Shuras and meetings for peace were held and demonstrations calling for peace were staged. UNICEF vacinating children for peace

17 September 2008 - Peace Days are very important to ensure all children receive polio vaccine on the days of the campaign. Many districts in the Southern and Eastern regions have been missed during the polio campaigns this year due to insecurity, attacks, and other violence. English

17 September 2008 - As a peace-building initiative, UNEP is working with the Government and local communities to develop and implement a community-based approach to natural resource management, a component of which is the development of policy and legislation, including a Rangeland Law, a Forest Law and a Water Law. A drawing competition for peace among 30 children from an orphanage in Kunduz has taken place.The Youth Information and Communication Centre and the Youth Federation organized prizes and gifts at the end of the ceremony. English

Celebration for Peace Day held in Argo district of Badakhshan

For the coming peace day on 21 September 2008, a gathering was held in the Argo district of Badakhshan organized by district officials and facilitated by UNAMA. Around 500 people attended the celebration from different villages of the district, including district officials, elders, teachers, students, Mullahs, and representatives from UNAMA and the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission. Nimroz joins Peace Day

The south western Afghan province of Nimroz is joining the Peace Day campaign with a variety of events and activities to highlight peace. The Governor of Nimroz has asked district leaders to campaign for the day and hold sessions with elders and communities to highlight the importance of peace. English


Youth Organise Fine Art Exhibition - “Art Spreads Peace”

Art works by well known painters and artists from the east of Afghanistan have been on show at an exhibition in Jalalabad to celebrate the International Day of Peace. Paintings in the “Arts Spreads Peace” exhibition were selected by the Youth in Action Association. The exhibition comprises artworks with subjects inspired by peace with the aim of demonstrating that art can help to spread peace in war-ravaged environments.
