What difference can one day make?
Peace Day is not just about the 21 September, the coming weeks give us all an opportunity to raise awareness and gain commitment from our families, friends and communities for peace.
Even one day of peace can make a difference by giving us a chance to vaccinate children, deliver food assistance and other life-saving activities in insecure areas. We can all play a part in making this happen by committing to just one day of peace. There were more than 80 activities in Afghanistan alone last year where 1.4 million children were vaccinated against polio. In 2007 over 100 million people were active on Peace Day in 192 countries, including life-saving initiatives in 14 countries.
How relevant is this day to Afghanistan?
Peace is Afghanistan’s greatest need and it is the highest calling of the United Nations. With just one day of peace so much more can be achieved for those who need the most help. During last year’s Peace Day campaign the UN was able to gain access to vaccinate children, deliver essential food and carry out life saving humanitarian work for Afghanistan’s most vulnerable communities. Cynics may argue “What good is just one day?” But building peace always begins with just one day. Building peace is a process and not an event. It can start with one day and that success can be built on so more can be achieved with even more hours, days, weeks and months of peace.
